My partner Douglas Hewitt and I developed this project as a team. Through a thorough examination of the Model 3 onboarding experience, we were able to align Tesla's business objectives with the expectations of its users.
Tesla III Studio
I was responsible for various aspects of the project, including conducting user interviews, affinity mapping, creating personas, handling graphic design elements, prototyping, and usability testing.
The objective of this project is to familiarize individuals who have recently purchased a Tesla Model III with its basic features, prior to receiving the vehicle, and to streamline the initial experience for new car owners.
Double Diamond Design Method
Usually for the design process I use the Double Diamond method.
User Research
We started our user research in Tesla dealerships in San Francisco & Walnut Creek.
Conducted 8 interviews in person & by phone.
Received 21 surveys responses.
From user interview:
"Tesla is Apple among cars"
Me & Douglas at SF Tesla showroom
Affinity Mapping
I learned that people would like to know how to use Tesla Model 3 before the car delivered to them, they wish to know how to start it, how to use autopilot, how to charge the battery that they will serve longer and other basic & advanced features.
Competitors analyses demonstrated that Tesla & other companies who already has AR applications, they don't have explanations about usability of their products.
Competitive Analysis
Tesla needs to deliver as many Model III vehicles as possible while still providing an exceptional onboarding experience.
Current techniques are not working.
Users have expressed confusion and frustration about how to use their new vehicles, which are very different from traditional gas cars.
Problem Statement
Design a mobile application with an intuitive explanation of key features of the Model III.
The app can be referenced by the user before and after receiving their vehicle.
Solution
Augmented Reality App might be a good solution
Our application may look like this but users will be able to get additional information about the features of Tesla Model 3 by clicking on highlighted areas of the interface.
Augmented Reality Experience
I used my videography skills for this presentation
Even Augmented Reality is require higher efforts but users consider that feature as important & desirable
Detailed car information was also requested by users
Feature Prioritization

User Flow

After a brief discussion, our team agreed to divide the application into two main sections: AR onboarding experience that will allow learning how to use Tesla Model 3 even without the car & detailed information about features of the car.
